Dance Wear

Some would say that dancing is just as much about what the performer is wearing, as it is about the movements the dancer is executing. It is true that the relationship between dance wear and styles is undeniable. Each style has its own outfit and they are all very unique.

Possibly the most iconic and universally known piece of dance wear is the tutu. The ballerina is usually the first person that the mind conjures up when we think of a dancer. There are three main styles of tutu: the romantic, the classical and the bell. The romantic tutu was the first ever worn, originating back in Paris in 1832. The reason for the introduction of the tutu is surprisingly logical; it was to meet the demands of the audience who wanted to see the intricate legwork of the ballerina. The classical tutu is shorter than the romantic and its construction is based on a stiff wire inserted into the central ruffles. It is this wire that gives the tutu its signature shape.

The style of dance wear will often influence a person's decision on what type of dance to learn. Many people are drawn to the long flowing ball gowns associated with ballroom dancing. Others are interested in the bedlah, the costume worn by the belly dancer. Whatever style of dance you choose to learn, you will most likely not wear the costume until you are quite accomplished in the art.

For your first dance lesson, it is important that you have dance wear that is both comfortable and practical. Wear something similar as you would to the gym. You want to have complete freedom of movement and avoid excessive weight that you could feel whilst wearing a heavy ball gown. You also want to avoid potential injury to you or to others. Learning to belly dance in the traditional bedlah could cause injury. The sequins, embroidery and beads could become tangled causing you to stumble. We all want to wear the amazing dance wear while we learn, but this takes time and you have to earn it.
