Hip Hop Dancing

Hip hop dancing started back in the late 70's with the introduction of breakdancing. This style of dance was used on the streets of the Bronx to settle disputes between rival gangs. It was the first time that art successfully replaced violence in resolving a dispute. The person responsible for pushing breakdancing and hip hop dancing culture into the mainstream was Afrika Bambatta. This man was a legendary DJ and motivated a generation of youth to express themselves through acrobatic dancing rather than through violence.

Today, hip hop dancing is associated with the new craze called Krump. Krump is a type of street dance as well and its depiction in recent Hollywood movies has only served to increase its popularity. The style of Krump is also used as a form of expression much like breakdancing to release negative aggression and energy.

Hip hop comes from urban areas and the youth from these areas have always been disenchanted and full of questions and anger. This is why the music is so urgent and constantly questions the powers in authority. It stands to reason that the dance used to express the music should react the same way. Some would argue that hip hop and hip hop dancing are one of the true American art forms.

If you are looking for a great workout and a way to learn some impressive dance moves, the medium of hip hop could be for you. Be prepared for high-energy intensive sessions and a sense of competition. Do not let this put you off the idea though, the competition is friendly and welcoming and for the youth, a great release and means of expression.
